Stop taking ‘over the counter’ cough medicine

They’re not even recommended by the medical institution anymore.

Did you know that OTC cough syrups and medicines are now being recommended AGAINST?

And yet they’re still lining the shelves (and the pockets of Big Pharma) everywhere.

The recommendation against using over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines, especially for children, has been based on several factors:

  1. Lack of Efficacy: Research has shown that many OTC cough medicines are not very effective in relieving cough symptoms. Studies have found that these medicines often perform no better than a placebo.

  2. Potential Risks and Side Effects: Cough medicines can have side effects, including drowsiness, dizziness, and upset stomach. For children, there is a risk of more serious side effects, such as allergic reactions, increased heart rate, or even overdose if not administered properly.

  3. Risk of Misuse: There is a concern about the misuse of certain cough medicines, especially those containing dextromethorphan or codeine, which can be abused for their psychoactive effects.

  4. Guidelines and Recommendations: Health authorities, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the FDA, have issued guidelines recommending against the use of OTC cough and cold medicines for children under a certain age (typically under 6 years old) due to the lack of proven benefit and potential for harm.

Instead of OTC cough medicines, alternatives such as honey (for children over 1 year old), humidifiers and diffusers with airway expanding therapeutic essential oils like Easy Air or Eucalyptus , plenty of fluids, and rest are often recommended to manage cough symptoms. For persistent or severe coughs, it's advised to seek medical advice for appropriate treatment.

Essential Oil Starter Bundle for immune support, coughs, colds, airways and clear breathing and protecting from sickness - Home Essentials Starter Pack

How to use for therapeutic care:

  1. Inhalation of essential oils for clear airways, coughs and colds: Essential oils can be diffused into the air and inhaled for therapeutic benefits. For coughs, colds and clear airways, diffusing Easy Air or Eucalyptus oil are incredible as the 1.8 cineol constituent acts as a bronchial dilator.

The Home Essentials Starter pack also comes with oils that support better sleep (frankincense, lavender, peppermint) for times of stress and anxiousness and also oils that provide calm, clear airborne pathogens and support the immune system (OnGuard and Lemon). OnGuard has also been studied for it’s powerful ability to attenuate the effects of influenza. (see study here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21078173/)

  2. Topical use: Applying essential oils directly to the skin is a powerful way of receiving benefits. Oils like Easy Air, Eucalyptus and Peppermint, diluted in a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil and massaged onto the chest and upper back (over the lungs) are amazing ways to receive cough and cold support, naturally, with side benefits not side effects.
