Ways I wish I’d supported my skin at 25 I do now in my 40’s.

Reducing the visible signs of ageing in the skin involves a combination of lifestyle choices, skincare practices, and possibly some professional treatments.

I definitely put some serious work into damaging my skin in ways that can’t quite be undone. When I was a teenager, I used to climb onto the roof with the 15 meter phone chord (Yes, I’m THAT old), slather myself in baby oil and sun-bake in the nude until I was the darkest shade possible.

I drank and smoked incessantly in my teens and all of my twenties. I stayed awake for days at a time. I drank black coffee for the hot, and diet coke for the cold.

Just… ewwwww.

Holy crap did that girl not care about ageing or her skin then. Invincible and silly.

Now, in my 40’s, I’m super conscious of how I care for my physical health and my skin.

I care about my presentation. When I look healthy and vibrant and fit, I feel better, full stop. I spend of time in the sun surfing and this is not always as the most opportune tims to protect my skin health, so I have to make the best decisions I can to support the damage this causes.

Here are comprehensive tips to help maintain youthful, healthy skin I wish I had started in my 20’s that I do now in my 40’s!

Lifestyle Choices

  1. Healthy Diet:

    • Consume a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Focus on lots of colourful fruits, vegetables, animal proteins, and healthy fats.

    • Specific skin-friendly foods include berries, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish.

  2. Hydration:

    • Hydrate well throughout the day to keep the skin hydrated from the inside out. I like to use cooled herbal tea in hot weather or warm herbal tea in cold weather. I also drink electrolytes to support mineral balance within my body for skin health.

  3. Adequate Sleep:

    • Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep allows the body to repair and regenerate skin cells.

  4. Stress Management:

    • Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises. Stress can accelerate the aging process by increasing cortisol levels.

  5. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol:

    • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to premature aging and skin damage. Avoid smoking and drink alcohol in moderation. I personally gaive up alcohol as I didn’t have a healthy relationship with it, and I can say for a fact that my skin looked better and I looked younger, brighter and healthier after giving up than I ever looked when I imbibed. Might be worth considering.

Daily Skincare Routine

  1. Sun Protection:

    • Daily Sunscreen: I use Surfmud when I’m in the water and I use Avocado Zinc, People4Ocean or doTERRA mineral sunscreen under my make-up (if I’m wearing any) throughout the day. I am absolutely aware of how beneficial getting the sun on my skin is and I don’t apply sunscreen all over my body. I am active outdoors every single day, usually from early morning, so I apply if I am going to be in sun during peak times of the day or for extended periods.

  2. Gentle Cleansing:

    • Use a mild, hydrating cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. For me, this is the Verage cleanser, which is hands down the best, gentle cleanser I have ever used. Even on the zinc I wear in the ocean.

    • Avoid harsh soaps and excessive washing or scrubbing.

  3. Moisturising:

    • Apply a moisturiser suitable for your skin type twice daily to keep the skin hydrated and maintain its barrier function. I use the Verage moisturiser. It’s light, it’s dewy, and it really keeps moisture in then skin. It is not oily and doesn’t leave a residue or grease stain on your pillow. You can apply makeup over the top and it doesn’t cake your foundation or BB cream.

  4. Exfoliation:

    • I gently exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. I use a really soft dry brush to do this and not exfoliant creams. I love how this promotes circulation and keeps my skin feeling glowy. If you love a cream, use a gentle organic exfoliant. You can personally make one of these using pure coffee grounds with some raw sugar and coconut oil. If you have a doTERRA account, I recommend you purchase cypress and grapefruit essential oils and add a few drops to it to promote flow and fluid drainage.

  5. Serums:

    • I cannot rave about the doTERRA Salubelle Serum enough here (it comes in the Verage Skincare Collection at the lowest price and highest value). CPTG® essential oils of Frankincense, Hawaiian Sandalwood, Lavender, Myrrh, Helichrysum and Rose assist in supporting healthy looking skin.

    • The lipid complex goes above and beyond a typical moisturiser by using lipids similar to those naturally found in skin in its prime.

    • Hydrates deeply to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

    • Advanced formula combines the lipids of olive, jojoba, and macadamia oils to produce amazingly soft and smooth skin.

Targeted Supplements

  1. Peptides, NAD+ precursors and Growth Factors:

    • Ageing is caused by a mix of things, oxidative damage/cellular turnover, cellular autophogy, inflammation, metabolism. There’s many studies that show that ageing itself is caused by NAD+ degradation. NAD+ acts as a cofactor for enzymes involved in cellular energy metabolism and various metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, fatty acid oxidation, and the citric acid cycle.

    • Use products containing peptides and growth factors to support collagen synthesis and skin repair. I religiously take the doTERRA MetaPWR advantage collagen + NA (precursor to NAD+) + Hyalauronic acid + resveratrol + biotin sachet. This is designed specifically to reduce and reverse the signs of skin aging and support healthy skin.
